A devastating building collapse which occurred at Arowojobe Estate in the Maryland area of Lagos State, has led to the deaths of three site workers.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement released to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Thursday.

According to LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency received a distress call at 3:49 a.m. regarding a collapsed building at No 13, Wilson Mba St., Arowojobe Estate, Maryland, Lagos.

Response teams were promptly activated, and upon arrival, they discovered a set of three terraces under construction had collapsed.

Rescue efforts yielded the recovery of three adult males, who were pronounced dead at the scene. Two male adults were rescued alive, and another adult male was trapped under the rubble but later rescued. The six individuals involved were all site workers, with the rescued ones receiving pre-hospital care on location.

“The agency received a distress call regarding a collapsed building at the above address at about 3.49 a.m.

“This prompted the immediate activation of the agency’s response team to the scene of the incident at 3.58 a.m.

“It was discovered that a set of three terraces under construction had collapsed.

“One of the rescued was receiving treatment on-site.

“Search and rescue operations began immediately, and three adult males were recovered dead, two male adults were rescued alive, and one adult male trapped under the rubble was rescued,” he said.

He also revealed that the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit had been contacted to handle the remains of the three fatalities. A combined team of LASEMA personnel, the Lagos State Fire Service, and the Nigeria Police are working together at the scene, with LASEMA’s excavator deployed to accelerate search and rescue operations.
