On Wednesday, the All Progressives Congress ward congress in Ondo State descended into violence, resulting in two fatalities and multiple injuries in the Idanre Local Government Area.
The incident happened just twenty-four hours after political thugs stormed the APC Secretariat in Akure, interrupting a stakeholders meeting that state chairman Ade Adetimehin was presiding over.
The chairman and other party officials were attacked during the assault, and other party members were hurt.
According to accounts on Wednesday, party members were attacked by alleged thugs, making it impossible for the congress to continue in some Idanre wards. During the crisis, cars were allegedly set on fire.
At the time this report was filed, the reason of the issue was still unknown.
One of the casualties is Raphael Adetimehin, the brother of the APC chairman, who was viciously attacked in his Idanre ward by the alleged political thugs.
Adetimehin, the chairman of the APC, acknowledged the incident and said that the thugs had attacked his brother.
He said that his brother was shot and macheted, and that the assailants also allegedly set fire to his vehicle.
“My brother was attacked, and because we look so similar, the people who attacked him believed I was the one.”
When they believed he was dead, they left him after shooting and stabbing him. I’m not sure why we’re getting so involved in politics,” Adetimehin said.
DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the public relations officer for the Ondo State Police, stated in a statement that three persons were hurt and two people were killed in Idanre.
The statement stated that a vehicle was set on fire and that the attack happened at approximately 11 a.m.
A joint team of security personnel was then personally led to the location by the Commissioner of Police and CC Oluyemi Ibiloye, State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
According to the statement, “their prompt intervention ensured the restoration of peace and order in the affected area.”
“Two victims were confirmed dead at the hospital, and three others suffered varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical attention,” Jimoh continued.
“The circumstances surrounding the attack are being investigated in order to identify the perpetrators of this horrible act.”
In order to control the area and stop more violence, the police asked the public to maintain their composure and assured them that more tactical teams had been sent in.
The CP directed that more tactical teams be sent out right away to secure the area and its surroundings in order to save lives and property and prevent any further breakdown of law and order.
Elders of the APC denounce attacks
The attack on the party secretariat in Akure on Tuesday was denounced by Ondo State APC elders under the PBAT Mandate Elders Forum. Fifteen elderly people were reportedly hurt during the assault and are currently being treated at the hospital.
The elders characterized the occurrence as a breach of the rule of law, democratic ideals, and party discipline.
The forum said in a statement signed by Pa Erastus Akeju, its chairman, “The public humiliation and violent attack on the Ondo State APC Chairman, Engr. It is completely unacceptable that Ade Adetimehin and other esteemed party leaders and stakeholders were attacked by thugs posing as political figures.
“Any democratic society cannot tolerate such lawlessness, but it is especially unacceptable in a party that takes pride in internal democracy, progressive values, and deference to established authority.”
“The President’s lifelong commitment to democracy, justice, and institutional order must now find expression in restoring sanity, ensuring accountability, and reaffirming that violence will never be rewarded in our party,” Akeju said, urging President Bola Tinubu to step in.
He also called on the National Working Committee and APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda to move quickly, stressing the necessity of a comprehensive investigation, suitable penalties, and unambiguous instructions to strengthen discipline and security throughout party institutions across the country.
“Let me say unequivocally and unequivocally that physical violence, thuggery, and intimidation have no place in politics.
The APC was founded on ideas, discussion, and the combined desire of Nigerians who want democratic administration, not brigandage.
“The entire basis of political order is endangered when elders are humiliated and leaders are thrashed within the confines of a party secretariat.
“I vehemently denounce this incident on behalf of the PBAT Mandate Elders Forum, Ondo State.
“It is an attack on the integrity of the All Progressives Congress itself, in addition to on individuals. “In the face of such brutality, silence or indifference would embolden impunity and invite further chaos,” the statement continued.
