Following their suspected involvement in a plot to topple the country’s democratic government, two Nigerian military commanders are said to have left the country.
The two officers fled just before authorities launched a fresh round of arrests connected to the failed coup attempt, which has already resulted in the detention of at least 16 officers since the first week of October, according to security sources who spoke with The Cable.
Major J. M. Ganaks, a member of Regular Course 58 of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), with service number N/14363, was recognized as one of the escaping officers. He was stationed at Jaji, Kaduna State, and is from the Federal Capital Territory.
Captain G. Binuga, a Taraba State native and member of Regular Course 64, is the second officer. His service number is N/167722. He was most recently assigned to the Defense Headquarters Special Operations Force (SOF) in Bida, Niger State.
According to reports, both cops were among the 18 individuals who were originally scheduled for arrest; however, they were able to avoid apprehension and are currently thought to have fled the nation.
According to sources, the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), which is in charge of the investigation, has obtained “useful statements” from individuals who have already been arrested.
A senior security source claims that the information gathered during questioning has assisted the authorities in making more arrests, increasing the number of cops in custody to more than thirty.
According to the source, “many of the arrested officers have been very cooperative, but some are keeping mum.”
The arrests are a part of a nationwide campaign against suspected military members who are allegedly planning to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government.
