Gregory W. Meeks and Sara Jacobs, two prominent members of the US Congress, have denounced President Donald Trump’s threat to launch a military attack in Nigeria due to claims of Christian genocide.
Trump’s remarks were deemed “irresponsible and reckless” by Meeks, a ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Jacobs, a ranking member of the Africa Subcommittee, in a joint statement.
Additionally, the congressmen disagreed with the Trump administration’s designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” arguing that it oversimplifies the complicated nature of the nation’s violence.
The classification disregards the fact that conflicts between farmers and herders are frequently motivated by land competition and resource scarcity rather than religious beliefs. Particularly in northern Nigeria, where villages are still being attacked by criminal gangs known as bandits, terrorist organizations have targeted both Christians and Muslims, according to the statement.
