The Senate’s proposal on the Electoral Reform Amendment Bill, according to Monday Ubani, SAN, chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association’s (NBA) Electoral Reform Committee, leaves opportunity for error.
During an interview on Arise Television on Saturday, Ubani made this declaration while answering questions.
Nothing has changed, he emphasized, adding that human collation occurs in collation centers for both electronic transmission and transfer.
He maintains that IREV is only for showing findings and does not compute or tabulate them.
According to the attorney, the Senate’s version has a flaw that most Nigerians find objectionable: it allows for communications failures that might be used criminally.
There is potential for electoral error in the Senate’s proposed bill. Any discrepancies will be examined by a harmonization committee, which will then create a unified version that will be given to the president for approval.
The House of Representatives completed theirs last year, and the Senate passed theirs as well. There are some discrepancies, but the committee will meet on Monday to reconcile those positions, which makes me very glad.
The law, known as the 2022 Act, said that INEC was tasked with providing guidelines or prescribing guidelines for the method of transfer.
The conflict between the polling station and the collation center has always been an issue in our election system.
He stated, “The public has seen a scenario where a different outcome will be announced at the collation center, different from what happened at the polling unit.”
