28 students have been expelled by the University of Abuja administration for various disciplinary offenses, such as exam malpractice, cult activity, and result fabrication.
According to reports, the decision was made at an institution Senate meeting.
Habib Yakoob, the university’s acting director of information, made this known in a statement issued on Sunday. He clarified that the action came after the Student Disciplinary Committee’s findings and recommendations were reviewed.
The statement claims that the impacted students were convicted of a number of crimes, including theft, assault, burglary, conspiracy, and threat to life. Others were connected to hard drug use and possession as well as cult-related activities. Additionally, some of the students were charged with posting phony O-Level results on the university’s admissions website.
Despite multiple invites, some of the students did not show up for the disciplinary committee, the statement continued. Consequently, the Senate also authorized the revocation of diplomas previously given to fifteen former students who disregarded the committee’s summons despite numerous warnings.
Nine students were found not guilty by the Senate after it reviewed previous instances. However, 33 students were warned for offenses like fighting, collusion, and hostel racketeering.
Hakeem Fawehinmi, the university’s vice chancellor, stated that the school is still dedicated to maintaining a secure and conducive studying environment on campus. The school will continue to uphold order at all levels and implement its regulations, he said.
He also praised the Student Disciplinary Committee’s efforts in thoroughly examining the instances that were presented to it. The vice-chancellor urged students to act appropriately and refrain from doing anything that would interfere with their studies or hinder their academic advancement.
