The Vatican announced on Tuesday that Pope Francis’s remains will be transported to St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. (0700 GMT).
The Vatican announced in a statement that the pontiff’s remains are now resting in a coffin in the chapel of the Santa Marta residence, where he resided for the duration of his 12-year pontificate.
After battling pneumonia and a stroke, the pope passed away from a stroke on Monday at the age of 88, according to the Vatican.

The Vatican reports that the cleric was hospitalized for five weeks earlier this year due to double pneumonia, claiming that he had a stroke, went into a coma, and then suffered from “irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse.”
Ahead of a conclave next month to choose a new leader of the Roman Catholic Church, cardinals will gather on Tuesday to organize his funeral, which will be attended by world leaders.
