Eric Chelle, the head coach of the Super Eagles, has talked about a tearful conversation he had with Victor Osimhen during Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign in Morocco.

Speaking on RMC Sport’s After Foot, Chelle recounted a touching chat she had with the striker during Osimhen’s injury struggles, just before Nigeria’s third-place playoff match against Egypt.

“We absolutely had to aim for that third place,” I informed him. However, it was evident to me that he was hurt and that nothing was going smoothly. When I took over this team, I told him, “I’m proud of what you’ve done.” “Call me whenever you need me, no matter what happens in your life, and I’ll come,” Chelle replied.

He disclosed that Osimhen’s answer made him cry, calling the incident one of the most poignant in his management experience.

“He said to me, ‘Coach, you may have been a small coach, but now you are a great coach,'” Chelle recalled. I started crying at that moment. To be honest, continuing on to training after that was challenging.

Osimhen had a great tournament despite suffering a hamstring injury, scoring four goals and dishing out two assists in six games. He was named to CAF’s Team of the Tournament for his performances.

Nigeria had a steady winning streak during their AFCON 2025 campaign.

Before defeating Algeria 2-0 in the quarterfinals and rolling past Mozambique 4-0 in the Round of 16, the Super Eagles won their group with wins over Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda.

Nigeria lost to host Morocco on penalties following a goalless 120 minutes in Rabat, putting a halt to their campaign.

In response, the team won the bronze medal by defeating Egypt 4-2 on penalties following another 0-0 stalemate in Casablanca.
