The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, says voter apathy is not unusual in elections in Nigeria.
Okocha, who spoke to journalists after casting his ballot at Ward 12, Unit 11 in Rumuigbo, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, however, described the local government elections as seamless and well-organized compared to previous elections.
On his expectations from the winners of the Saturday election, the APC Chairman said winners are expected to be people-oriented, with a focus on delivering infrastructural development and projects for their people.
Okocha said, “Apathy is not unusual in elections. Some persons would decide not to come out and vote.
“Some children would take the opportunity, advantage of the fact that there is no movement to start playing football on the road. So, it is like that.”
Saturday’s local government elections witnessed low voter turnout in many areas, except in polling units of prominent political figures in the state, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, the APC Chairman, and council chairmanship candidates in the various LGAs.
Opposition parties were conspicuously absent in most polling units, leaving the APC and the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, to dominate the process.
The elections were largely peaceful, with many residents, especially in rural communities, going about their daily activities.
