The governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, has been requested by the North-Central All Progressives Congress, or APC, Forum to immediately apologize for reportedly inciting thugs against the party’s national chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, during Sunday’s North-East stakeholders meeting in Gombe.
After Ganduje and Comrade Mustapha Salihu, the APC National Vice Chairman (North-East), endorsed Tinubu for a second term without mentioning Shettima, Zulum allegedly organized a protest that interrupted the meeting.
Due to demonstrations at the meeting location, Ganduje and Salihu had to be removed out of the building under strict security.
In a statement released on Monday by its chairman, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, the North-Central APC Forum responded to the development by criticizing Zulum’s actions and charging him with inciting thugs against the APC national chairman.
Noting that only the President has the authority to name the Vice President, who serves as his running mate in the presidential election, the Forum also supported Ganduje’s move.
“The President has the prerogative to designate his Vice President,” the statement read. No one will compel President Bola Tinubu to designate a vice president; he is free to choose anybody he believes he can collaborate with.
We strongly condemn the actions of Babagana Zulum, the governor of Borno State, who organized thugs to attack Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, the national chairman. As the party’s national chairman, Ganduje was carrying out his constitutionally mandated responsibilities; he is innocent.

The national chairman does not have the authority to choose a vice president. Furthermore, he is under no obligation to recommend someone for vice president. He was impartial throughout the North-East stakeholders meeting, as is expected of him as a party official.
“The Governor of Borno State is being asked to apologize by the North-Central APC Forum for inciting thugs to attack the National Chairman. Governor Babagana Zulum needs to immediately apologize to Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje.
“We, as stakeholders dedicated to the party’s growth and advancement, are dissatisfied with the governor of Borno State’s actions.”
The Forum also denounced Zulum’s behavior, stating that the North-East and the Borno governor had no right to feel entitled to any APC advantages because the region failed to provide Tinubu and the party with the anticipated results in the 2023 election.
The statement said that rather than the North-East, the North-Central, which supported President Tinubu and the APC more in the previous election, should be the one requesting preferential treatment.
Despite the vice president being from the region, it is documented that the opposition triumphed in the North-East in 2023. The APC and Tinubu received the third-highest number of votes from the North-Central, after the North-West and the South-West.
“That makes Governor Babagana Zulum’s action even more regrettable because if any zone should feel entitled to special considerations, it is definitely not the North-East,” the statement continued.
Tinubu received the most votes from the South-West, according to a breakdown of the 2023 presidential election results. 2,542, 979 votes, or 58.4 percent of the total votes cast in the South-West, went to the President.
Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) received 951,941 votes (22.6%) in the zone, while Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) received 849,423 votes (19.5%).
Tinubu received 2,652,235 votes (41.0%), Atiku received 2,197,824 votes (33.9%), and Kwankwaso received 1,268,250 votes (19.6%) in the North-West.
Obi received 1,415,557 votes (33.2%), Atiku collected 1,025,178 votes (24.1%), and Tinubu received 1,760,993 votes (41.3%) in the North-Central.
Atiku, on the other hand, received the most votes in the Northeast (1,741,846; 55.9%), while Tinubu came in second with 933,176 (29.9%).
In the states of Borno, Zulum, and Shettima, the APC received 252,282 votes, while the PDP came in second with 190,921.
The North-Central APC Forum further noted that Shettima’s selection as Tinubu’s running partner in 2023 was predicated on political calculations that might not hold true for the upcoming election, in reference to Ganduje’s alleged failure to endorse the vice president.
In particular, the Forum pointed out that the Muslim-Muslim APC ticket was chosen as a tactic to win the 2023 election.
It’s probable that when President Bola Tinubu runs for reelection in 2027, a Muslim-Muslim ticket won’t be the best choice anymore. In addition, party leaders will consider the sources of a greater number of votes. The interests of the parties involved should guide the consideration of all these matters, not the self-serving interests of any one person.
We thus support the president’s choice when it is made since he is aware of what is best for the party. We further anticipate that every member of the party, regardless of their inclinations or position, will support the President’s choice,” the statement read.
In response to the demonstrations that followed the Gombe North-East stakeholders meeting, the Forum also denied rumors that the event marked the start of an APC crisis.
“The situation in our wonderful party will not be impacted by the isolated incident that occurred in Gombe during the North-East stakeholders meeting. Under President Bola Tinubu’s excellent leadership and that of National Chairman Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, the APC, a progressive party, is a powerful institution that will not falter.
“All party supporters are urged to maintain composure and concentrate on the goal at hand, which is to achieve a decisive win in the 2027 election and the off-cycle polls. The statement added, “We have faith that the party will continue to be strong and cohesive.
The Forum reiterated its support for President Tinubu as the APC’s only candidate for the 2027 election in a similar manner. Additionally, it reiterated the vote of confidence that Ganduje received as the party’s national chairman.
The APC is in good hands with President Bola Tinubu and Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje in the saddle, the statement continued, and all members are urged to refrain from any actions that could confuse the situation and divert attention away from the outstanding work that Mr. President and the national chairman are doing for the party and the nation as a whole.
The Forum reiterated its commitment to secure six million North-Central votes for Tinubu in 2027.
