Ahead of the general elections in 2027, Senator Aliyu Wamakko, the current senator for Sokoto North and the former governor of Sokoto State, has categorically dismissed rumors that he is considering running for vice president.
The rumor surfaced amid conjecture that President Bola Tinubu would replace Vice President Kashim Shettima with a new running mate as part of political realignments. However, Wamakko called the assertion “false, unauthorised, and politically mischievous” in a statement released by his spokesperson, Abdallah Shehu El-Kurebe.

The study, which was released online and attributed to Abdullahi Yerima, the chairman of the Kebbe Local Government, had recommended backing for Wamakko’s purported vice presidential candidacy. “Senator Wamakko has never, publicly or privately, expressed interest in contesting for the position of Vice President in the 2027 elections or in any political arrangement of that nature,” Wamakko said, rejecting the allegation. Any such assertion is unfounded, untrue, and extremely careless.
Wamakko emphasized that he would not be sidetracked by “opportunistic narratives concocted for selfish motives” and that he is still dedicated to providing responsible leadership to the people of Sokoto State and Nigeria.
Relatedly, Dikko Radda, the governor of Katsina State, has denied similar allegations that he is on the vice presidential ticket. Ibrahim Mohammed, his chief press secretary, called the reports “mere political permutations” and stated that Radda is still committed to carrying out his mission in Katsina.
