Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto, has called for dialogue as a crucial instrument for reestablishing peace in the face of growing insecurity throughout Nigeria.
According to reports, the Sultan’s appeal coincides with the Christian Association of Nigeria’s (CAN) calls for swift action against individuals who encourage violence.
Speaking during the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council’s (NIREC) second triennial conference in Abuja, which had as its theme “Collaboration of Inter-Religious Councils with Government to Promote Peace in Nigeria,” the Sultan emphasized that using force alone would not bring about permanent peace.
He urged religious leaders to promote interfaith understanding, neighborliness, and unity while cautioning against hypocrisy, backbiting, and division.
“You can really sit and discuss any issue between you as people, as religious followers,” he remarked. God is perfect, as I mentioned. To help us comprehend one other, Jesus divided us into nations and tribes.

Daniel Okoh, President of CAN, emphasized in his statement the connection between justice and peace and demanded that those who commit acts of violence be held accountable.
Okoh also called on religious leaders to help people reject violence and false information while promoting interfaith harmony and unity.
Justice is necessary for peace, he said, and those who commit or finance acts of violence must be held responsible. Religious leaders have a responsibility to lead the public in rejecting divisiveness, violence, and lies.
“We can ensure that unity and compassion become the foundation of a peaceful Nigeria, protect lives, support victims, and foster social harmony by working together across faiths.”
