The Muhammadu Buhari administration suspended Twitter (now 𝕏) due to the risks associated with uncontrolled social media activity, according to former Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed.
Lai Mohammed said during an appearance on Channels Television that 𝕏 was not registered to conduct business in Nigeria before the ban.
He claimed that the ban was warranted by the final deal reached with the social media company.
He cited the conversation between Nigeria and Twitter prior to the lifting of the ban, citing his book Headlines and Soundbites: Media Moments That Define an Administration.
“You’ll see all the correspondence between us and Twitter when you go through this book,” he stated. According to the inked agreement, Twitter was not even registered to conduct business in Nigeria at the time, let alone pay taxes.
The NCC and other parastatals will tell you that this book contains the contract they signed with us. It’s clear that we made the correct decision.
He said that the government’s actions were motivated by worries about national unity and the risks associated with uncontrolled social media use rather than ego or political retaliation.
The reason for this is that Nigeria is a nation that offers a wide range of freedoms. You shouldn’t push that to the point where it will incite conflict between different regions of the nation.
“Unlike television, radio, or newspapers, where you have the gatekeepers, social media reached a point where it was becoming dangerous to everyone,” he stated.
Mohammed linked the government’s worries back to 2017, when he started speaking out against misinformation, hate speech, and fake news.
He emphasized that the government first sought self-regulation rather than legislation, explaining that multiple meetings were held with media groups and social media businesses.
“I believe I began the war against misinformation and fake news in 2017. I continued that by visiting media outlets to help us fight the perils of hate speech, fake news, and misinformation.
We urged a few of these microblogs to engage in self-regulation. We weren’t even considering passing legislation to suppress the media. However, we were worried that uncontrolled social media could be harmful to society,” he stated.
Despite the government’s repeated warnings, the former minister said, some forums eventually turned into instruments for people looking to threaten Nigeria’s stability and unity.
