The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has warned that it is too early to reveal his next steps if the coalition fails to designate him as its flagbearer.
According to reports, Obi made this statement amid mounting speculation over the shape and leadership of the projected opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Obi made the remark during a virtual interaction organized by ParallelFact on 𝕏 (previously Twitter) on Sunday, when he answered questions from fans and political watchers.
In response to a query on what he would do if the opposition coalition, which includes Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, and Rotimi Amaechi, did not choose him as its presidential candidate, Obi stated that the group has yet to establish a party.
He emphasized that conversations were still underway and reassured his supporters that he was dedicated to inclusive politics.
The former governor of Anambra State stated, “From day one, I have always attended every coalition meeting unless I was traveling.” Whenever I have problems, I always consult with them. I can’t say the coalition will produce Peter Obi. When we get to that stage, we talk about it.
“But the coalition represents us banding together to defend the country. We haven’t reached the point where we declare it will be this individual. I feel that those who are banding together are decent people who wish to work for the betterment of the [nation]. That’s my belief.
“And if that’s the case, I believe there will come a day when we will all make sacrifices for our country. That’s how I perceive things. At that time, we shall make certain that the best among us emerges as [candidate].

“The coalition intends to become a party. And we plan to do so very shortly. Other parties will continue to join. Other parties have not joined because there are issues inside their respective parties.
“I wish I could answer that question for you, but I can’t right now. I know I told you that the coalition isn’t discussing who will be this or that. I will do what is best for the country and what those who follow me want. I don’t discuss such issues on my own.
“Few leaders have acted as if they were alone and without consultation. It’s not yet time. We just want to get together. When that moment comes, you will know, and I will consult. I will then explain what I want to do. I’ve never done anything without consulting someone first. If you are one among my close friends, you will know that I sought advice before leaving the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP. I didn’t just wake up and decide to do this. And if I were elected President, I would not make decisions without first consulting with others.
