The rule of law and democracy, in my humble opinion, are the best forms of government and man’s victory against the capricious use of power.Obafemi Awolowo, Chief (1909–1987).
It is inevitable that a nation that has lost its history will be left without a thorough knowledge of its sociocultural, political, and traditional values. Nigeria was at a turning point until recently, when Olusegun Obasanjo, the country’s president, outlawed history as a subject in schools for the vile reason of trying to hide his shady political past.
Due to Obasanjo’s local and presidential incompetence, any Nigerian who is currently forty years of age or older might not, unless they work for it, have any historical awareness of the contributions our late political icon and sage, Chief Jeremiah Oyeniyi Obafemi Awolowo, made to our wonderful nation. Awolowo passed away on May 9, 1987, and is still regarded as the unquestionable father of progressive politics in Nigeria.
Apologies to the late Biafran warlord Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu, Awolowo will always be remembered as the “best president Nigeria never had” because to his lasting legacy, even though he was never elected president of this nation. Furthermore, as long as Nigeria exists, Awolowo will be regarded as the most prominent, knowledgeable, and powerful one-man political opposition this potentially magnificent nation has ever created. Awolowo’s personal power throughout his lifetime was equal to that of his political parties, which spanned the first and second republics. His political group, the Action Group, AG, which was founded on March 21, 1951, was as powerful as he was throughout the first republic. More significantly, the party was strongly opposed by the central government at the time and firmly established in the hearts of his people.
Ignoring Awolowo, a powerful opposition leader at the time, would have put the ruling party in danger politically. In the first republic, his incarceration served as a sign of the political era’s nunc dimittis. The Awolowo opposition phenomena at the time was that powerful.
Here we are in the second republic. Awolowo ran under the progressive Unity Party of Nigeria, or UPN, but was unsuccessful. Awolowo remained a particularly powerful and effective opposition voice against poor government until the fall of that republic and beyond, and his UPN had the greatest and most empirically supported political party manifesto and program in Nigerian history.
As Premier of the Western Region in the 1950s, Awolowo founded his Action Group party, which is based on his welfare-socialism political philosophy. No Nigerian, educated or not, can dispute Awolowo’s developmental and progressive influence, which has made his region one that other sections of the country follow and envy, whether in the ancient western region, modern southwestern Nigeria, or the entire nation. His party has successfully implemented programs that previous administrations in the nation have deemed too idealistic to replicate, like free health care, free education at all levels, full employment for all citizens, and integrated rural development.
Awolowo’s oppositional skills are prophetic, analytically intelligent, and selfless. In a letter to National Party of Nigeria (NPN) President Shehu Shagari in 1981, he noted that the “ship of state is fast approaching a huge rock” and threatened to bring about “unspeakable disaster” if nothing changed.
The disastrous results of his warning going unheeded are, as they say, history. The Awolowo uniform cardinal program magic wand has not been replicated by any political party in the southwest region of Nigeria, not even in modern-day Nigeria.
A Political Bureau led by Professor Samuel Cookey was established by the autocratic Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida in August 1985, months after he had taken control of the country in a military coup. Naturally, Awolowo was one of the prominent Nigerians summoned by the Bureau at that time. On February 28, 1986, however, Awolowo bravely wrote to Professor Cookey, identifying the Babangida abracadabra when no one else did. He said, “I do fervently and will continue to fervently pray that I may be proved wrong,” in reference to the brutality of military force. Clearly, something inside of me tells me that the search we have started is pointless. In the end, we would be really disappointed when we thought the new order had arrived. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the current president of Nigeria, was one of the members of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) group that emerged from the horrific end of that experience, which prevented Nigeria from holding its best elections ever. At the time, few Nigerians took him seriously.
The political intellectual discipline and selflessness of an Awolowo are unmatched by any opposition figure in modern-day Nigeria. What we currently have, notwithstanding political divisions, are avaricious political harlots posing as advocates for the people. They criticize the current administration and leading people for personal enrichment rather than for the good of the group, and they do so in order to get financial or appointment chances.
Awolowo gave the opposition a strong political basis. Regardless of how much you like or dislike him, his political savvy, moral integrity, and unwavering discipline are undeniable. The administration of that time shuddered when Awolowo spoke. He was the moral and political leader of his time, and Nigeria has yet to replicate him today. In response to a shared national dilemma, Awolowo offered alternative views free of pointless opposing critique.
The modern opposition, in contrast to Awolowo’s selfless oppositional model, squandered a great deal of time, effort, and money settling preventable internal party disputes and divisions, leaving little opportunity for any significant checks on the current administration.
In the nation’s current political parties, there are numerous instances of power struggles and divisions that are harmful to the development of significant opposition. The leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Labour Party (LP), the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP), and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are currently in a preventable political bind because of their insatiable desire for power and financial gain.
These political parties’ leadership lacks the political legitimacy and qualifications necessary to persuade voters that they are desirable alternatives to the current administration.
Who has crossed political parties in their excessive desire to control this nation, Peter Obi or Atiku Abubakar, in defiance of any recognized ideology? Could it be Rabiu Kwankwaso or any of the previous politicians running for president without any kind of formal policy platform?
In Nigeria, the opposition is dispersed and lacks coherence. They continue to harbor the delusion of taking control in this chaotic condition without a clear or different vision for government. Where is the country’s opposition’s current weak and disorganized front and where is the intended strategic direction?
Can the ruling party be effectively held accountable by the existing opposition? The opposition of today lacks conceptual coherence. They have less interest in fortifying their opposing base and more in facilitating easy alignment with the ruling party. Given that the political establishment has failed to provide a compellingly clear message, it is understandable that the opposition consistently finds it difficult to carve out a place in the electoral landscape.
As the nation’s economic and security problems become more difficult to solve every day, the search for a “Awolowo” in today’s opposition persists.
