Wife Scalds Husband with Boiling Cooking Oil in Rivers Incident

In the Okehi community of Etche Local Government Area in Rivers State, a distressing incident unfolded when Hope Nwala allegedly scalded her husband, Ekelediri Nwankwo, by pouring scorching groundnut oil over him. The incident occurred amidst longstanding tensions stemming from the behavior and attire of the wife’s younger sister, who resided with the couple.
Hope Nwala, a resident of Obite Community in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, reportedly fled Okehi after committing this heinous act.
Narrating the events to reporters on October 11, 2023, Nwankwo explained that he had taken issue with his sister-in-law’s disrespectful behavior and provocative clothing, prompting him to suggest she return home. He offered her money for the journey. Nevertheless, his wife vehemently opposed this decision, leading to a heated argument between the couple.
During her stay in their home, Nwankwo observed suspicious conduct on the part of his wife, particularly her interactions with a mysterious man who frequented their household while he was present. Summoning the courage to confront his wife about his observations and inquire about the stranger’s identity, he was met with violence. While he slept, his wife poured boiling oil on him and struck him with a hammer.
Nwankwo recounted, “I told my wife’s younger sister to leave my house because of the way she started dressing. Her behavior and her occupation of my marital bed, even when I was present, were unacceptable. No reasonable man would tolerate such conduct. However, my wife opposed her sister’s departure.”
He further disclosed, “I also noticed my wife spending time alone with a tall, unidentified man in the shop I rented for her. His presence was unrelated to any business matters. He followed my wife and her sister everywhere.”
“In light of these circumstances,” Nwankwo continued, “I provided her younger sister with two thousand naira for transportation so that I could understand the situation in my own home. But my wife became enraged. While I retired to bed, she used boiling groundnut oil on me and proceeded to attack me with a hammer.”

Rivers State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident and assured that an ongoing investigation is in progress, even though the suspect is currently evading arrest. Iringe-Koko stated, “I can confirm the incident. The matter was reported at the Igwuruta Police Station. The woman has fled, but we are actively pursuing her to ensure her apprehension and bring her to justice.
