The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has strongly denied claims by former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, that he played a pivotal role in shaping Wike’s political
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Wike recounted events that contradicted Amaechi’s assertions, insisting that he was the one who put everything on the line to support Amaechi’s rise to power.
According to the FCT Minister, when Amaechi was exiled in Ghana during a critical political period in Rivers State, he personally travelled there multiple times to meet him—even preparing a will due to the risks involved.
“When he was in Ghana, I flew in to see him. He would wear a face cap and pick me up at the airport. I remember shedding tears,” Wike recalled.
“I risked my life and spent all I had to help him become governor. I even handed my wife my will at one point because I wasn’t sure I’d return safely.”
Wike further responded to Amaechi’s claim that he is financially dependent on his wife, branding the statement as false and disrespectful.
“It’s regrettable that Amaechi would describe his wife as an industrialist when she is, in fact, a trader. I hold women in high regard and rarely bring them into political debates.”
The Minister also made a serious allegation, claiming that Amaechi’s wife had received ₦4 billion monthly from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for a year, under the pretext of mobilizing Niger Delta women.
He challenged President Bola Tinubu to make public the findings of the long-awaited NDDC forensic audit.
“If that money is not mentioned in the audit report, I’m ready to resign as FCT Minister,” he declared.
On Nigeria’s current economic trajectory, Wike blamed the Muhammadu Buhari administration for the country’s economic woes, describing it as a regime that left Nigeria on the verge of collapse.
“President Tinubu inherited an economy that was in ruins. Everything had collapsed. Nigeria was practically dead,” he said.
While acknowledging the difficulties Nigerians are facing, Wike stressed that no administration can fully reverse the damage in just two years.
He also dismissed claims by the new ADC-led opposition coalition that they will unseat Tinubu in 2027.
“Tinubu is not like former President Jonathan. Despite all odds, he won in 2023. That speaks volumes.”
