Prior to the 2027 elections, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has stated that he and Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers State, have parted ways politically.
Wike emphasized that he would not repeat what he called the errors of the 2023 election and stated that he would personally back a candidate he could trust to replace Fubara.
The former governor of Rivers State made the statements over the weekend while speaking to his supporters in the state’s Ahoada Local Government Area.
He said that prior agreements with the governor had been broken, making more political cooperation difficult.
“We will not repeat the mistakes we made in 2023,” Wike declared, adding that no one in Rivers State will control his political choices.
Additionally, he refuted assertions that recent political rallies and slogans would guarantee any candidate an electoral ticket.
Governor Fubara recently switched to the All Progressives Congress, or APC, as was previously mentioned.
However, Wike made it clear that his public endorsement of President Bola Tinubu does not automatically translate into support for Fubara’s reelection campaign.
Citing what he called Tinubu’s benevolence toward Rivers State, including his nomination as FCT minister, he reaffirmed his support for Tinubu and said the president should be given a second term.
In spite of this, Wike insisted that Rivers State’s political actions will be solely based on interests and trust.
“So, shout on your mandate fifty times a day if you’d want. You won’t automatically receive a ticket. Bring everyone, if you’d want, and shout about your mandate that doesn’t come with a ticket.
“Politics is about interest,” he declared, adding that he would “sleep with his eyes closed” and back a candidate he can trust.
