The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will hold its national convention on March 29 and 30 as scheduled, according to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, who also stated that efforts to make amends with disgruntled members will continue following the event.
Additionally, Wike said he was confident the party would shock Nigerians with its success in the general elections of 2027.
A group led by Tanimu Turaki filed an appeal with the Supreme Court, but he dismissed it, saying it would not have an impact on the conference.
Speaking on Friday night after touring the convention’s location, the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome in Abuja, Wike emphasized that settling internal disputes is a continuous process.
“There is room for accommodations,” he stated. The PDP is a major party. Take a look at the umbrella; everyone can fit under it.
“I’ve always stated that complaints will arise in any group. It is unrealistic to expect everyone in a household of two or three to be content all the time, much less a gathering of millions of people. There will always be some unhappy people. We’ve decided to meet with them, learn about their worries, and figure out how to make accommodations. The party’s overall interests are the most crucial factor.
Regarding zoning, Wike affirmed that important roles have already been distributed among areas to maintain equilibrium.
“Our positions have already been zoned. Each zone has its own slots. The chairmanship has been assigned to the North, while the presidency has been assigned to the South. We think this consensual framework will facilitate the process.
Instead of the customary “unity list,” which frequently reflects internal divisions, the PDP is putting up a united front for the first time. Everyone has agreed on the course we are following, thus there are no factions.
The convention’s preparations are almost finished, he continued.
“We’re ready. The purpose of this visit is to evaluate the final arrangements. We are roughly 95% prepared, like I mentioned, and everything will be ready by tomorrow.
“The VIP area is prepared, and all state seating arrangements have been finalized. More than 2,500 delegates are not anticipated.
The conference is set to take place on Sunday and Monday in Abuja.
