Arsenal defeated Lyon 4-1 in a thrilling comeback to win 5-3 overall and advance to the Women’s Champions League final for the first time in over 20 years.
Last year’s runners-up, Lyon, led 2-1 going into the second leg. However, Arsenal equalized early in the game as Christiane Endler unintentionally scored an own goal.
Then, just before halftime, Mariona Caldentey put Arsenal ahead with a masterfully executed strike. Alessia Russo added to the lead shortly after the interval by scoring a third goal.
With less than ten minutes left, Lyon’s Daelle Melchie Dumornay scored, giving Arsenal a nervous end even though Caitlin Foord’s goal appeared to have sealed the lead. The club will now get ready for its May 24 matchup with Barcelona, the two-time defending champions, at Lisbon’s Estadio Jose Alvalade.
Given that it has been eighteen years since Arsenal last made it to a Champions League final, this accomplishment is very significant.

Lyon gave a surprising showing in the game, but Arsenal’s planning and execution were excellent.
