The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Oyo State Command, has deployed 2,550 personnel across the state to ensure the security of lives and property during the yuletide.
The deployment, directed by the State Commandant, Augustine Padonu, is effective from Friday, December 20, to January 8, 2025, and is aimed at maintaining peace and order during the festive period, a statement by the NSCDC Public Relations Officer, SC Samuel Opebiyi, read.
Opebiyi said that the Command has strategically divided the personnel to cover high-risk, medium-risk and low-risk areas throughout the Pacesetter state.
“A total of 1,500 personnel will be deployed to high-risk areas, 750 to medium-risk areas, and 300 to low-risk areas.
“The personnel will be assigned to various duties, including round-the-clock patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering, rapid response, and administrative and logistical support.
“All Area Commands and Divisions have been directed to deploy their personnel strategically around critical national assets and infrastructure, road intersections, motor parks, amusement centres, religious houses, and other public places,” the statement read further.
The PRO said that the focus of the deployment would be on identified hotspots for criminal activities, areas with high population density, major transportation hubs, commercial centers, markets, religious centers, places of worship, residential areas, recreational centers, parks and educational institutions.
The statement added: “Oyo NSCDC aims to ensure public safety, prevent criminal activities, and maintain peace and order throughout the festive period.
“The State Command has established clear operational guidelines for the deployed personnel, including rules of engagement and a code of conduct.
“The Corps will also coordinate and communicate with other security agencies to enhance the effectiveness of the deployment.
“The State Commandant, Commandant Augustine Padonu, has directed key departments and specialised units, including the Intelligence and Investigation Department, Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Protection Unit, Disaster Management Unit, Counter-Terrorism Unit, Agro-Ranger Unit, Armed Squad Unit, and the Female Squad Unit, to enhance surveillance and emergency response capabilities.
“These efforts are also targeted at preventing crimes such as kidnapping, vandalism, and other criminal activities during this festive season.”
While giving the orders, Commandant Padonu urged all deployed personnel to exhibit the highest level of professionalism, discipline, and vigilance in the discharge of their duties.
He emphasised the importance of maintaining a robust and proactive approach to security to create a safe environment for all residents and visitors during the festivities.
Members of the public have been encouraged to remain security-conscious, watchful of their belongings, and adopt moderate lifestyles.
Residents are also advised to avoid ostentation, maintain a low profile, and exercise self-awareness in crowded places.
Saying that cybersecurity precautions are also essential, individuals were reminded not to disclose sensitive information on social media to avoid falling victim to criminal activities.
Event organisers were urged to collaborate with NSCDC for proper event planning and to utilize the Corps’ crowd control mechanisms to ensure the safety of their guests.
Similarly, those traveling during the season were advised to use government-approved motor parks and avoid travelling at night to reduce risks.
He said that his Command is always ready to welcome reports of suspicious activities, urging the public to report such promptly to NSCDC or other security agencies.
The Command wished all residents of the state a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in advance, enjoining all to ensure a peaceful and joyful celebration.
