On Independence Day, October 1, gunmen suspected of being bandits made a bold attack on Gusau, the capital of Zamfara State, kidnapping two local government council members in office as well as another citizen.
The allegedly heavily armed gunmen reportedly opened fire in Gusau’s Tsauni neighborhood at approximately 8 p.m. on Wednesday, dragging their victims into the bush.
The state’s Maradun Local Government Area’s Gidan Gona and Tsibiri wards are represented by the kidnapped council members, according to locals who told reporters about the situation.
Speaking to SaharaReporters, security analyst Salihu Bamle characterized the incident as yet another reminder of the state’s deteriorating instability.
“The capital of Zamfara, Gusau, was attacked by bandits on Wednesday night in the Tsauni neighborhood. According to Bamle, two current council members from the Gidan Gona and Tsibiri wards in Maradun LGA were among the several individuals kidnapped.
The kidnapping has already been verified by the Zamfara State Police Command. Three people were abducted during the operation, including the two council members, said to ASP Yazid Abubakar, the command’s spokeswoman.
In order to find the culprits, he promised, agents had been mobilized in conjunction with other security organizations.
The command is putting in a lot of effort to make sure the prisoners are safely rescued. ASP Yazid stated, “There is hope for the future.”
The kidnapping occurs as the Federal Government, armed groups, and the Zamfara State Government resume peace negotiations, according to Naija News. Residents, however, claim that bandits still murder, raid, and kidnap people in communities.
Nationwide indignation was sparked recently by the slaughter of victims inside a mosque in Zamfara during evening prayers. Critics have charged that authorities have not taken decisive security action to support peace negotiations.
The Independence Day attack on Wednesday serves as yet another sobering reminder to many residents that peace is still a long way off.
