Nigeria’s political landscape is witnessing a dramatic realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections. The African Democratic Congress (ADC), under the newly inaugurated interim national chairman and former Senate President, David Mark, is fast emerging as a formidable coalition poised to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a significant development, Borno State—a traditional APC stronghold—has become the epicenter of high-level defections. Videos circulating online show former PDP governorship candidate and APC heavyweight, Mattawali Kashim Ibrahim Imam, hosting a discreet political dinner in Maiduguri. Sources say the meeting was attended by several key figures laying the groundwork for their transition to the ADC.
This development comes in the wake of recent defections by two major opposition leaders—former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and former Labour Party flagbearer Peter Obi—who both announced their exit from their parties to join the growing ADC-led coalition.
Despite widespread rumors suggesting that Borno Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, and five other governors were preparing to defect, the governor has publicly denied any such move.

On the ground in Borno, however, the political tide is clearly shifting. Former PDP governorship hopeful Alhaji Idris Mamman Durkwa and youth mobilization leader Hon. Sheriff Banki have officially joined the ADC, taking thousands of supporters, family members, and local allies with them.
Durkwa, a former federal civil servant, is reportedly leading the charge, as defections pour in from both opposition ranks and ruling APC members. Multiple politicians across the state have submitted resignation letters to their ward leaders.

Hon. Abdulrazaq Ahmed Zanna (2023 Bama/Ngala/Kala-Balge Reps candidate)
Other notable defectors include Hon. Maina Justice (Jere LGA leader), Hon. Fali Wubulari (former House of Assembly member for Askira Uba), and House of Assembly candidates across all 27 local government areas of Borno.
Also joining the mass exodus are Hon. Isa Lawan Kangar, ADC’s 2023 Borno North senatorial candidate, alongside almost all local government and ward-level party executives, and over 90% of key opposition stakeholders.
Speaking to our correspondent, Hon. Sheriff Banki said the movement reflects rising discontent with the APC-led government, which has failed to address the country’s deepening economic crisis and widespread insecurity.
Banki also lambasted the PDP’s internal leadership, accusing it of undermining party unity and grassroots support in Borno.
“In the past two years, Tinubu’s administration has made life harder for ordinary Nigerians. The ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda has delivered nothing but hardship,” he said.
He described the ADC as a party that offers a real alternative—one rooted in inclusion, accountability, and grassroots engagement.
“We call on Nigerians to rise and support the ADC,” Banki added. “It is the only political platform genuinely committed to rescuing this nation.”
