In the 2027 general election, Salihu Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman, North West, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has urged Nigerians to take action and make sure that President Bola Tinubu and the ruling party are defeated.

The only way to do this, according to Lukman’s statement released on Thursday, is if Nigerians concentrate on creating a political party that operates effectively and adheres to its own set of norms.

In contrast to the APC, PDP, Labour Party, LP, New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, and all other registered political parties in the nation, he emphasized that such a viable political party must be distinctly different.

According to him, Nigerians may once again fall short of their hopes for free, fair, and credible elections. Or, like in 2015, we might have reasonably free, fair, and credible elections in 2027, which might only lead to the APC and President Bola Tinubu’s defeat. This would carry the risk of maintaining the status quo by turning out emperor-style leaders who would only ostentatiously pledge to address Nigeria’s problems.

“As Nigerians, we must rise to the occasion and ensure that the APC and President Asiwaju are defeated in 2027. More importantly, we must ensure that really democratic leaders—not emperors—are elected.

In order to enable internal competition for the emergence of party leaders at all levels, a political party should be effectively organized.

“The procedure wherein potential candidates are forced to run by party officials, who then crown them as candidates, needs to alter.

“The process of forming a new party simply means maintaining the status quo if it is unable to ensure internal competition and use it to produce party leaders.”
