Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s recent attempts to reach out to the Yoruba people “carry little weight,” according to the South West chapter of the Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement (GHSM), which has made it clear that the region has already chosen Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim as its preferred presidential candidate for the general elections in 2027.
Earlier this week, Atiku, who is now a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), promised the Yorubas that, should he be elected president, their interests will be the first priority of his administration.
Citing his personal contacts and marriage, the former vice president called the South West his “extended family” and dismissed concerns about Fulani’s power as “unfounded.”
However, in response in Osogbo on Thursday, GHSM South West Coordinator Alhaji Abass Olaniyi brushed off Atiku’s comments as romantic language that ignores the pressing needs of the Yoruba people and all Nigerians.
Simply stated opinions or sentimental assertions won’t influence the South West. Leadership based on competence, honesty, and a vision for a better Nigeria has always been what our people have demanded. Olaniyi stated, “For this reason, we firmly support Dr. Gbenga Hashim.”
Gbenga Hashim, he says, is more than just a politician running for politics. He’s a clean-handed democrat, a successful businessman with international recognition, and a bridge builder who can bring the North and South together.
Hashim is particularly suited to represent the progressive ideals of justice, equity, and innovation in the region while simultaneously meeting national goals, Olaniyi underlined, because of his Yoruba heritage and widespread acceptance.

Olaniyi asserts that “Dr. Hashim is running on the platform of a bigger politics, and the PDP, a platform bigger than Atiku’s ADC in particular.”
He also contrasted Hashim with Atiku, characterizing the former vice president as a living example of Nigerian politics’ “old order.”
“Our folks are not content with being promised a place in an extended family or to be “in-laws.” Our ideal leader would be able to restore confidence in the government, have the guts to restructure Nigeria, and comprehend the intricacies of the modern global economy. He said, “Gbenga Hashim is especially noteworthy as that leader.”
In addition, the GHSM South West Coordinator called on Yoruba leaders, traditional leaders, civil society organizations, and young people to solidify their backing for Hashim, characterizing him as the candidate of conscience who has the ability to bring Nigeria together, eradicate insecurity, and boost the labor market.
The South West has a history of supporting progressive ideas, and Olaniyi said that in 2027, that heritage will be maintained by steadfastly supporting Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim.
