Princess Aderemi Adebowale’s Tested Model Scales Up as Renewed Hope Programme Targets Classroom Hunger

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to improving the welfare, education and future of Nigerian children is gaining momentum with the launch of the Federal Government–Lagos State “Adopt-A-School: Snacks for Thought (PBAT FEEDS)” initiative, a landmark intervention that will provide daily breakfast support to 30,000 public primary school pupils across Lagos State.

The programme, launched under the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (RH-NHGSFP), is designed to tackle classroom hunger, improve learning outcomes and ensure that children begin each school day nourished, focused and ready to learn.

The initiative is widely regarded as a practical demonstration of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, translating policy commitments into tangible benefits for Nigerian families and reinforcing the administration’s pledge to place human capital development at the centre of national progress.

Central to the programme’s success is the work of Princess Aderemi F. Adebowale, National Programme Manager of the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, whose years of advocacy and innovation in child nutrition helped shape the model now being adopted on a larger scale.

Before the official launch, Princess Adebowale successfully piloted the “Snacks for Thought” breakfast concept across several communities in Lagos State. The pilot phase was implemented in Kosofe Local Government, Somolu Local Government, Bariga Local Council Development Area, Lagos Island East LCDA and selected public primary schools within Lagos Island Local Government Area.

One of the programme’s most notable pilot interventions was carried out in 33 public primary schools across Lagos Island, where nearly 12,000 pupils benefited from structured breakfast support. The pilot recorded positive outcomes in attendance, concentration, classroom participation and overall readiness to learn, providing the evidence needed for broader expansion.

The success of the pilot programme laid the foundation for the current partnership between the Federal Government and Lagos State, demonstrating that strategic nutritional support can significantly enhance educational performance while promoting child welfare.

Officials involved in the programme note that hunger remains one of the most significant obstacles to effective learning among school-age children. By providing nutritious meals before classroom activities commence, the initiative seeks to improve cognitive development, academic engagement and long-term educational outcomes.

Beyond its educational benefits, the programme is expected to stimulate economic activities across the food supply chain. Through the sourcing of food items from local producers and suppliers, the initiative will create opportunities for farmers, food processors, transporters, caterers, women entrepreneurs and small businesses, supporting broader economic development goals.

A key feature of the programme is the Adopt-A-School framework, which allows corporate organisations, philanthropists, development partners, alumni associations, faith-based organisations and community stakeholders to support school nutrition efforts through a transparent and accountable system.

The Lagos State Government, in partnership with the Federal Government and the state’s 57 Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas, has expressed confidence that the programme will contribute significantly to reducing learning poverty while strengthening educational outcomes among public school pupils.

Education stakeholders have consistently emphasized that proper nutrition is essential for effective learning. The rollout of PBAT FEEDS reflects a growing commitment to ensuring that no child’s academic potential is limited by hunger.

From the pilot communities in Kosofe, Somolu, Bariga, Lagos Island East and Lagos Island to the large-scale implementation now underway, the programme demonstrates what can be achieved when government policy is backed by innovation, collaboration and sustained commitment.

For the 30,000 pupils who will receive breakfast each day, the initiative represents more than a meal. It is an investment in their future, their education and their ability to contribute meaningfully to society.

As the programme takes root across Lagos, it stands as a visible example of how the Renewed Hope Agenda is delivering measurable impact where it matters most — in the lives of Nigerian children.
