The thirty-six state governors in Nigeria have endorsed the establishment of State Police in the country.

The stance of the Governors, under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), was made known in a communiqué signed by NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

It was learnt that the decision was taken at the meeting of the NGF which held in Abuja from Wednesday to early hours of Thursday.

The Governors say the move is constitutional and consistent with federalism and the rights of the citizenry.

The communiqué stated that the decision was taken by the Governors after a presentation by the Forum’s secretariat and a delegation of the Honourable Attorneys-General of the States on efforts to support the establishment of state police in Nigeria.

The governors said they had a special consultation with the attorneys-general to look at the proposed constitutional amendments and frameworks.

Remember that the bill for the creation of State Police has scaled second reading at the Senate and passed by the House of Representatives.

The governors also restated their commitment to continuous power sector reforms and deepening collaboration among stakeholders to grow access to reliable and affordable electricity for Nigerians.

The Forum was presented with a proposal to expand electricity access through large-scale decentralised solar generation integrated with a national high-voltage transmission network, the communiqué said.

Here, the governors acknowledged the initiative’s potential to support industrialisation, bolster energy security, strengthen state electricity markets and spur economic growth.

They also pledged their support for the National Nutrition 774 (N-774) Initiative, while reaffirming their commitment to improving nutrition outcomes and reducing child malnutrition across Nigeria, noting the ongoing work on the National Nutrition Bill and urging continued engagement with relevant stakeholders to strengthen the legal and policy framework for nutrition governance.
