Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church and the sovereign of the Vatican City State, has urged G7 leaders to expedite moves to regulate the use of artificial intelligence amid the inherent danger that it poses to mankind.
The pontiff, who made the call on Thursday while on a visit to Singapore, acknowledged that G7 leaders have the power to decide whether AI turns into a terrifying or useful tool and to prohibit the use of autonomous weaponry in battle.
During a reception in the technologically advanced city-state, the 87-year-old expressed his belief that robots should never have the ability to determine a person’s fate.
“In light of the tragedy that is armed conflict, it is urgent to reconsider the development and use of devices like the so-called ‘lethal autonomous weapons’ and ultimately ban their use,” he told the world leaders.
“This starts from an effective and concrete commitment to introduce ever greater and proper human control. No machine should ever choose to take the life of a human being.”
Francis also acknowledged that he was the victim of a deepfake photo, and also warned against the “perverse” dangers of artificial intelligence urging people to temporarily “set aside catastrophic predictions and their numbing effects” about new things.

Although artificial intelligence (AI) has many positive applications, its human developers have the power to use it as a weapon or as a tool to further mankind, with consequences that range from very little to unfathomably large, as listed below.
Privacy Violations: Fraud as well as several security and safety lapses. Concerns about cybersecurity, privacy, and data security breaches rank among the most significant problems with AI technology adoption.

Loss of human innovation and creativity: If AI is used excessively, it may become a dependency that reduces risks at the expense of disruption and creativity. In place of the natural human curiosity and desire for risk, society will choose stability and dependability.
Reality distortion: AI might lead to false information and misinformation. A distortion field that will impair human judgment and obscure reality could be created by the exponential growth of false information and disinformation.
Extinction risks: AI has the potential, at least in theory, to increase the probability of a mass extinction of humans, hence society should be aware of this and take proactive steps to mitigate it.
