The results of Saturday’s Anambra governorship election were rejected by African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate John Nwosu, who called the results a “ruse and total subversion of the people’s will.”

With 422,664 votes, Governor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) was proclaimed the victor of the race by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday.

Nwosu came in fifth with 8,208 votes, and Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) came in second with 99,445 votes.

Nwosu said that extensive vote-buying tainted the entire process in a post-election statement.

Voters were publicly coerced with payment ranging from ₦3,000 to ₦20,000 in nearly every polling station, transforming the entire process from a democratic exercise to a marketplace.

He declared, “This is a national embarrassment and a direct assault on the integrity of our democracy; it was a win bought with cash and a loss for democracy.”

Nwosu emphasized that “true victory is judged by the integrity of the process rather than the outcome.”

He declared, “The voice of the people cannot and will never be represented in an election rife with corruption, manipulation, and vote trading.”

If Nigeria genuinely wanted a rich and just country, the ADC candidate also demanded that the “culture of electoral corruption” be eradicated.

The “conscience of our democracy had been wounded,” according to Nwosu, who also cautioned that when votes are bought, the future is sold.

“What we saw was the blatant victory of greed and desperation over the values of justice and fairness, not the expression of choice,” he remarked.

The lawmaker also thanked his campaign team and party members for remaining strong in the face of “intimidation and inducement.”
