George Moghalu, the Labour Party candidate running for governor of Anambra State on Saturday, has explained why he lost his polling place.
Moghalu claimed vote-buying by some of the candidates for his defeat in his polling unit in an interview on Channels Television’s “Sunday Politics” show.
He claimed that he declined to participate in vote-buying because he could not afford to match the sums of money that other candidates were giving voters.
He claimed that a large number of voters in his voting place gave in to the allure of money since they were struggling financially.
Yes, as the amount that was being paid was above my means. I declined to participate and I was unable to pay.
What do you think my people will do when they have too much money to purchase votes? He stated, “They fell because many of them are impoverished.”
Moghalu especially charged that the All Progressives Grand Alliance, or APGA, the ruling party in Anambra, was primarily responsible for the purported vote-buying actions.
He disclosed that APGA party tags were worn by a number of party agents, some of whom had been arrested for buying votes.
There are records of some of them buying votes.
Moghalu continued, “There’s even a commissioner who was caught on camera buying votes in my particular constituency.”
