The violent standoff at the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Wadata Plaza headquarters in Abuja has been called disgraceful and pitiful by Ini Ememobong, the party’s newly elected National Publicity Secretary.
According to reports, Ememobong made this claim on Tuesday during an interview with Channels Television’s “Politics Today” show.
He questioned the procedure surrounding the contentious meeting and claimed that the violent altercation shows a troubling deterioration in Nigeria’s democratic culture.
Ememobong emphasized that the incident put party members in risk and expressed regret that every election cycle in Nigeria is growing worse.
The attorney accused the ruling party of encouraging animosity against the opposition, pointing out that a number of Nigerians had already died from breathing tear gas.
“Is that a NEC meeting?” he asked. INEC is required to oversee each NEC meeting. The fact that this is occurring after six election cycles is extremely regrettable and sad.
“Firm democratic consolidation is necessary. Democratic norms ought to be respected. They ought to be a part of our lifestyle. Sadly, things seem to get worse with each election cycle.
The majority will get their way and the minority will have a voice in a democracy. However, a minority is currently attempting to force its will on the majority.
