Sule Lamido, a former governor of Jigawa State, has accused governors elected on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform of preventing him from running for the party’s national presidency.

In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, Lamido claimed that despite a court ruling requiring the party to admit him to the race, the governors refused to provide him access to nomination forms.

He claims that he was personally requested to resign by Bala Mohammed, the governor of Bauchi State and head of the PDP Governors’ Forum.

“Bala, the governor of Bauchi, called and said, ‘My elder brother, you are stronger than us,'” he stated. We cannot influence you if we designate you as chairman.

Lamido said he turned down the request, telling the governor that the PDP was founded on group ideas rather than individual authority.

“I told him that you weren’t present when PDP was formed.” One guy shouldn’t be in charge of the party with history,” he continued.

The former governor clarified that the governors disobeyed a court order for the PDP to permit him to run. He claimed that instead, the party filed an appeal to prevent him from taking part.

Lamido stated that what happened went against the party’s constitution and democratic ideals and accused the governors of controlling the process.

Additionally, he disregarded Tanimu Turaki’s election as national chairman following the party’s most recent national conference.

He declared, “That convention is null and void,” asserting the illegality of the procedure.

Lamido called on key players, like as Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president, to step in and assist with the party’s reorganization.

He maintained that in order for the PDP to effectively fulfill its role in Nigeria’s democracy, it must go back to its core values.

The former governor issued a warning, saying that if internal democracy is not strengthened, the party could face additional collapse.
