According to the Kano Strategic Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), between January and December 2025, 7,773.06 kilograms of illegal substances were collected and 1,389 individuals were detained.
This was revealed by the State Commander, Mr. Dahiru Yahaya-Lawal, in a statement that the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, released in Kano on Thursday.
He stated that the arrest was a part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to stop drug misuse and trafficking throughout the state.
He said that 1,346 men and 43 women were among the suspects who were detained during various operations for drug-related offenses.
Cannabis sativa, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and psychiatric substances were among the narcotics found during the period under study, according to Yahaya-Lawal.
He said that the seizures demonstrated the command’s dedication to establishing a drug-free Kano State and called them a significant blow to drug trafficking networks.
He clarified that during the period under consideration, 141 drug traffickers and users were convicted by the command, while 133 cases were pending before the Federal High Court.
According to him, “two other properties were placed under interim forfeiture and a house acquired through the proceeds of drug trafficking was forfeited to the Federal Government, while four major drug dealers were sentenced to 33 years imprisonment.”
The commander said the agency adopted a holistic approach by combining tough enforcement with rehabilitation and drug demand reduction programmes.
According to him, 1,009 people—including 28 women—were referred by investigators and other stakeholders for short-term drug intervention services, while 94 people benefited from rehabilitation.
“We ran 254 anti-drug campaigns about the risks of substance misuse and trafficking in schools, marketplaces, streets, and communities throughout the state.
“The agency through the War Against Drug Abuse, WADA, advocacy, sensitised over 86,939 persons which comprised 41,225 males and 45,714 females through workshops and awareness programmes” he added.
Yahaya-Lawal stated that in order to protect Nigeria’s reputation overseas, the command also looked into 598 visa clearance applications from the Kano State Government, people, and organizations.
He continued by saying that 64 people tested positive for different drugs out of 527 substance abuse tests that were performed on them.
According to him, the command worked with other security and pertinent agencies to transfer cases involving crimes including gunrunning, banditry, fraud, theft, impersonation, and counterfeit pharmaceuticals to the proper authorities, such as the police, NAFDAC, EFCC, and DSS.
He commended the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Retired Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba-Marwa, and the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir-Yusuf, for their support.
He also lauded officers and men of the command, as well as other security agencies, traditional institutions, Non-Governmental Organisations and the media, for their roles in the successes recorded.
He assured that the NDLEA Kano Strategic Command would sustain intelligence-led operations, synergy and community partnerships to dismantle drug networks and ensure a safer society.
