Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s much-awaited departure from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been delayed.
The governor’s close ally informed Daily Post that Monday, January 12, 2026, will now be the official defection date instead of Monday, January 5, 2026.
On January 5, reports first suggested that Governor Yusuf was prepared to formally join the APC. But during a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja on Friday, Yusuf asked for more time, according to a source close to the governor who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The source claims that before completing the defection, the governor wishes to speak with a few state lawmakers and important stakeholders who are still not entirely on board with the suggested political action.
Reports of Yusuf’s intended departure from the NNPP to the APC have been circulating in Kano, an old city considered a major center of northern Nigerian politics, in recent days.
In other news, Ladipo Johnson, the NNPP’s National Publicity Secretary, has responded to reports of internal defections from the Kwankwasiyya movement.
According to reports, the NNPP is currently experiencing an internal crisis that is centered on Kano State, the party’s base. There are rumors that Governor Abba Yusuf may defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in early January 2026.
In an interview with Channels Television’s “Politics Today,” Johnson stated that Yusuf has not disclosed his defection to either the National Executive Committee or the National Working Committee.
The NNPP leader also denied rumors that Rabiu Kwankwaso, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has consented to Governor Yusuf and the Kano people joining the APC.
