Titus Uba, the former Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, has received a harsh response from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State. The PDP sarcastically apologized for elevating Uba inside the party and rejected his claim that he was neglected during his illness.

The PDP called Uba’s remarks during an event in Ute, Vandeikya Local Government Area, “false, ungrateful, and deliberately misleading” in a statement signed by Comrade Dan Nyikwagh, the party’s state secretary.

Titus Uba was promoted well above his “mental and appreciative capacity,” according to the party, which expressed regret for making him.

The PDP, led by former Governor Samuel Ortom, responded to Uba’s accusation that no PDP member had checked on him throughout his illness by calling it a fiction and emphasizing that the party had supported him during his medical difficulties.

The document claims that Uba became ill in 2022 and was first stabilized in Abuja before being transported to Germany for specialized treatment at a cost of more than N300 million, which was entirely covered by the Ortom administration. The group recalled that upon his return, a welcome reception was also planned.

The PDP added that Ortom maintained he remained the flagbearer, supporting Uba “against all odds,” in spite of attempts by some party members to replace him as the governorship candidate because of his health condition.

The party also disclosed that, following Uba’s defeat in the 2023 gubernatorial contest, it backed his legal fight, taking it all the way to the Supreme Court in January 2024.

The PDP, however, claimed that the former Speaker had deserted the party following the election, citing his lack of attendance at meetings, cessation of financial contributions, and absence from state and ward conventions in 2024.

The statement continued, “It is shocking and disgusting that Uba now publicly praises Governor Hyacinth Alia for renting an apartment for him in Abuja while ignoring Chief Ortom’s years of support and sacrifices.”

The party emphasized that it is not a charitable organization and questioned Uba’s lack of savings and reliance on others for necessities after serving as Speaker of the Assembly for eight years with full salary.

The PDP said it had moved on and called Uba’s resignation “good riddance,” stating that he had essentially left the party long ago.

“Marketing Titus Uba to Benue people was the most difficult task for the PDP,” the document said, pointing out that he failed to persuade even his relatives during a fictitious primary poll in which he purportedly placed fourth.

PDP apologized to Uba “for elevating him beyond his capacity” and expressed its hope that he would be able to forgive the party.
