Emeka Ihedioha, a former governor of Imo State, left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to formally join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Ihedioha reportedly finished his registration on Monday, January 12, 2026, at Mbutu Ward in Imo State’s Aboh-Mbaise Local Government Area. There, he was given a party membership card with number 001.
Prince Obinna Opara, the Ward Secretary, handled the registration, while Chief Alex Ahamuefula, the Ward Chairman, gave the former governor the membership card.
Ihedioha stated that his decision to join the ADC was thoughtful and based on the party’s tenets of accountability, unambiguous ideals, and service to the people in a statement made soon after he registered.
He claims that leadership that puts the public interest and responsive governance first is necessary in both Nigeria and Imo State.
“Our people deserve leadership that prioritizes the general good over individual interests, listens to them, and serves them. He declared, “I am convinced that the ADC offers a credible platform to pursue these goals.”
The former governor went on to say that his decision to register at the ward level demonstrated his dedication to inclusive participation and grassroots politics.
Party leaders, interested parties, and prominent members of the community, such as Hon. Jonathan Egbule, Chairman of the Aboh-Mbaise Local Government Area, and Evangelist Dr. Obi Nwaigwe, Mayor of Mbutu, attended the registration event.
The party’s National Vice Chairman (South-East), Sir Bon Unachukwu; Maigari Bello Kasimu, Deputy Diaspora Coordinator; and Uko Nkole, Coordinator of the Nigerian Former Legislators Forum, were among the national representatives of the ADC in attendance.
Ihedioha’s admission to the ADC, according to Unachukwu, has significantly raised the party’s profile in the South-East and nationwide.
He declared, “The ADC is happy to welcome a former governor and seasoned public servant whose entry will strengthen the party’s appeal.”
Members of the State Executive Committee were led by Prof. James Okoroma, the Imo State Chairman of the ADC, to greet Ihedioha and observe the registration.
On behalf of the party, Okoroma welcomed him and stated that the former governor’s choice had reinforced the ADC’s commitment to internal democracy and grassroots mobilization in Imo State.
