The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has rejected former Enugu State Governor Mr. Sullivan Chime’s endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressive Congress (APC) for reelection ahead of the 2027 general election.
Comrade Adolphus Ude, an ADC leader, made this claim in a statement released in Enugu on Wednesday.
Ude, the National Coordinator of ADC Like-Minds, described the support as meaningless and self-serving, claiming that Chime has the grassroots presence and political apparatus necessary to deliver anyone in his district in Udi town, let alone throughout South-East Nigeria.
He stated that in contrast to Chime’s assertion that the APC is the only option in the South-East, the region’s suffering masses have adopted ADC as a people-oriented movement to protect them from the ruling party’s mismanagement.
He claims that ADC is based at the grassroots level and that its members are Nigeria’s marginalized citizens who are neglected and dehumanized by the APC government’s poor management in South-East Nigeria and throughout the country.
“In addition to being inconsequential, Sullivan Chime’s endorsement of Tinubu is also self-seeking,” Ude said. When Sullivan was accepted into the party by then-National Chairman His Excellency John Odigie Oyegun, who is currently a leader in ADC, I was the Deputy Chairman of the APC in Enugu State. Adam Oshiomhole, the former chairman, famously said, “If you join APC, your sins are forgiven.” Sullivan is a living example of this.
“Secondly, Sullivan did not contribute shishi (a dime) to the APC during my tenure as Deputy Chairman, despite having amassed enormous wealth as the Governor of Enugu State for eight years, from 2007 to 2015.”
He characterized Chime’s alleged support for Tinubu as nothing more than grandstanding and an attempt by a retired politician to obtain cheap respect from the national leadership of the APC and the presidency, which he clearly does not deserve.
He claims that even as a sitting governor, Sullivan abandoned his plans to become a senator, allowing Ekweremadu to serve a fourth term in the Senate—a record that has not yet been surpassed by any senator in the whole South-East geopolitical zone.
He insisted that ADC, which is more grassroots focused than APC, cannot be threatened by Chime because it has no grassroots influence.
“It is untrue for him to claim that there is no alternative party in Enugu State,” Ude continued. Regarding the upcoming general election in the entire South-East, ADC is the alternative party.
“The public should ignore these endorsements by former this and that. No one has been backed by the suffering masses in the South-East who are being taxed to death.
Recall that two days ago, Chime expressed his support for the South-East governors’ and APC leaders’ and stakeholders’ endorsement of President Tinubu for a second term in office last weekend, stating that the President has done well.
Chime has no doubts about Tinubu and the APC winning the South-East elections in 2007.
