The late Senator Godiya Akwashiki was a “shining light” whose legacy of honesty, bravery, and selfless devotion will continue to inspire leadership in Nasarawa State and throughout Nigeria, according to Prof. Sadiq Gombe, National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The late senator, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District in the 10th Senate prior to his previous week death at the age of 52 in an Indian hospital, was honored with an evening of tributes organized by the party’s National Working Committee, during which Gombe spoke in Lafia.
The SDP leader claimed that Akwashiki’s strong sense of duty and patriotism made him stand out in public service. He also revealed that the lawmaker had voiced concerns about his deteriorating health and how it might affect his capacity to serve his constituency.
He even thought about resigning for the benefit of his people because he was concerned that his health issues would prevent him from providing good service. Gombe described the late senator as a leader who prioritized the public interest before personal ambition, saying, “That one act speaks volumes about his character.”
Akwashiki, who was born in Angba Iggah, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area, served in both state and federal parliament during his political career.
Before being elected to the Senate in 2019 and again in 2023 on the SDP platform, he worked in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, rising to the position of Majority Leader and then Deputy Speaker.
Akwashiki gained a reputation for diligence and cross-party cooperation while serving as Vice Chairman of the Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Chairman of the Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs, and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Air Force during his time in the National Assembly.
Senator Suleiman Adokwe and Nasarawa State Deputy Governor Dr. Emmanuel Akabe were among the other speakers at the tribute. They praised Akwashiki’s dedication to dialogue, grassroots development, and significant constituency projects throughout Nasarawa North, calling him one of the state’s most effective legislators.
They observed that his humility, approachability, and steadfast dedication to the well-being of his people characterized his leadership style.
Prayers for the late senator’s soul’s rest and calls for the rise of leaders who exemplify integrity, service, and fear of God—qualities that speakers claimed characterized Senator Godiya Akwashiki’s life and legacy—were spoken at the end of the tribute session.
