Aminu Muhammad, a factional chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, and his associate, Babayo Musa Garba, were suspended and expelled by the Bauchi State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Sunday. They were accused of trying to destabilize the party by posing as party officials.
The party reportedly revealed this during a news conference in Bauchi, when it reinforced Haruna Hassan, its State Chairman, as its leader.
Harsanu Guyaba, the party’s assistant publicity secretary, told reporters that the ADC was shocked by a statement released on Saturday, January 17, 2026, by what he called “impostors and disgruntled elements,” claiming to have suspended the state chairman and replaced him with his deputy due to alleged anti-party activities.
“We want to categorically state that the action of these self-proclaimed imposters is nothing but a desperate attempt to destabilize the growing strength, popularity, and unity of the party in Bauchi State,” he said.
“Their behavior is unacceptable and inconsistent with our great party’s ideals.”
According to documents dated January 2, 2026, Guyaba claims that Babayo Musa Garba was suspended and Aminu Muhammad had already been kicked out of the party.
He emphasized that no internal organization functioning under the name ALGON is recognized by the ADC.
“The two people lack the authority to represent or act on behalf of the party. Babayo Musa Garba is still suspended, while Aminu Muhammad has been expelled.
He declared, “The ADC does not recognize anything like ALGON as mischievously claimed.”
The party insisted that the two did not represent the ADC in any way and asked members and the public to ignore statements and publications ascribed to them.
Guyaba further urged security services and the Independent National Electoral Commission to be aware of this development.
He reassured party members that the state’s ADC leadership was cohesive and committed to creating a powerful political platform based on internal democracy, justice, and trustworthy leadership.
When Punch contacted Aminu Muhammad, he responded by denying that he had been kicked out of the party and maintaining that he had been an ADC member in Bauchi State for the last eight years.
He insisted that he was still the head of the party’s ALGON organization and asserted that he had never received an expulsion letter.
Muhammad further claimed that on January 17, 2026, the state chairman was invited to testify before a disciplinary committee over alleged violations of the party’s constitution and anti-party activities by the chairmen of the 20 local government ADC chapters in the state.
He claims that the chairman was given a sufficient chance to defend himself in the invitation letter dated January 6, 2026, but he reportedly disregarded it.
“We decided to suspend the State Chairman, Mallam Hassan Haruna, from office with immediate effect in accordance with the provisions of Article 15(C)(3) of the ADC Constitution,” Muhammad stated.
He further stated that the suspended chairman was given the opportunity to appeal within 14 days, and Mallam Mahmood Tabla, the Deputy State Chairman, had been instructed to take over in an acting capacity until a legitimate congress was held.
