Benjamin Kalu, the deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, has refuted the allegation that he is desperate to win the governorship of Abia State in 2027, emphasizing that the people of the state and his party, the All Progressives Party (APC), will decide his future political move.
He emphasizes that serving the people of BendeFederal Constituency is his current goal and that being governor is not the ultimate goal for someone like him.
Speaking to reporters on Friday at his country home, Kalu insisted that 2026 is still too early for political changes, emphasizing that his main concern is still providing his constituents with high-quality democratic dividends rather than the position he will hold in 2027.
The year is still 2026. I haven’t announced what I plan to run for in 2027 yet. “I will take a stance when the time is right, and whatever my people and my party say I should contest,” he said.
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives stated that his invitation to Governor Alex Otti to join the APC was motivated by friendship and the party’s interest.
Using the occasion, he refuted the rumor that he, Kalu, is preventing the governor from joining the APC, saying, “The narrative that I want to block him from coming to APC is not true.”
“I am the one inviting him to APC, but if I were self-centered, I would do so.” Theodore Orji, the former governor of Abia State, joined the APC as a result of our continuous party membership push.
“I had already extended an invitation to the governor to join us in APC, but that was earlier. Right now, he knows what’s best for him. Kalu said, “I’m not making that call anymore.”
He clarified that, in accordance with the party’s national policy, he was willing to let any current governor who joined the APC assume control of the state’s party organization.
“The APC will inevitably produce a candidate for Abia State governor. Party politics operate in this manner, he claimed.
Even though he reaffirmed his support for the construction of one more state for the South East in order to bring the zone up to par with other federation zones, he claims to be highly interested in bringing development to the Bende Federal constituency.
He insisted that the establishment of an extra state in the South East would contribute to the country’s advancement, unity, and cohesion. The House of Representatives’ Deputy Speaker took the chance to refute claims that part of the ongoing roads he brought to Bende had been abandoned.
Speaking about his leadership, Kalu reiterated his dedication to effectively representing the Bende Federal area. He stated that more than 20 road projects have been finished in the area and that a number of others are still in progress.
For the renovation of the Umuahia-Bende-Ohafia-Arochukwu Road, Kalu claimed to have raised ₦10 billion.
“The road is part of the agreement between the Federal Government and the Abia State government for reconstruction,” he declared, citing information from the Minister of Works. He voiced his concern over the condition of the road, saying that it is shameful that such an important route would be in such bad shape.

“In the Bende Federal Constituency, no project is abandoned. Every project is continuing. A failed 20-meter stretch of the 5.8-kilometer Bende–Ozuitem Road was visited by someone who began disseminating false information. “That’s not governance,” he declared.
In response to concerns about the Electoral Act, Kalu denied that the House of Representatives was intentionally delaying the process, claiming that the House is waiting on the Senate to take concurrent legislative action.
Kalu reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s pledge to ensure that states and local government councils follow the Supreme Court’s ruling regarding local government financial autonomy.
The constitutional court’s rulings must be followed. Governors will, in my opinion, comply when the time comes. State governors would be able to focus on more ambitious development initiatives if local governments used funding efficiently, he continued.
Regarding peace in the South East, Kalu clarified that he will soon see results from his peace program. He claims that the program has been discretely interacting with agitated groups with good outcomes.
