Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State will suffer repercussions for forsaking the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP).
The governor announced his resignation from the NNPP on Friday, stating that the party was in a dire condition that could not be resolved.
Along with a few members of the State House of Assembly and the House of Representatives, he left the party.
This occurred a few days after he was requested to formally resign from the NNPP’s Kano State Chapter before to joining the All Progressives Congress, or APC.
Following a private discussion with President Bola Tinubu, Yusuf made the choice.
In response, the NNPP denounced the Governor for asserting that there is an irreversible crisis within the party in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson.
The party recently held congresses to elect its leadership, from the ward level up to the national convention, which took place on December 20, 2025. The governor was present at these events, which were overseen by the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, according to the statement, which called his claim unfounded and said it was an afterthought.
The party also reminded the governor that it took part in and won two further elections for the Bagwai/Shanono and Ghari/Tsanyawa constituencies in August 2025.
“We are very sad and really upset to learn that His Excellency, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf has resigned and left the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP),” the NNPC said.
“We are deeply saddened by Governor Abba’s decision to betray the trust that the people of Kano State had placed in him due to his long and devoted service to the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
By doing this, he might revive the same factions that have long opposed the advancement of the state and the aspirations of its citizens.
In Kano’s political history, betrayals of this nature have occurred before. Alhaji Abubakar Rimi joined the Nigerian People’s Party (NPP) in the early 1980s after leaving the People’s Redemption Party (PRP).
Almost all local government chairmen and council members, 120 of the 126 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, and the majority of Kano legislators in the National Assembly were among the elected officials he brought with him.
“Voters made their choice evident in the 1983 gubernatorial election: Mallam Aliyu Sabo Bakin Zuwo of the PRP party defeated Rimi handily, and he finished in second place. More significantly, only one of the 120 state assembly members who switched parties with Rimi was re-elected. Any politician considering leaving their own party should take note of this as a stark warning.
“Everyone who supported the Kwankwasiyya proposal finds this scenario extremely distressing and difficult. We urge the 1,019,602 voters who supported his victory, as well as the people of Kano State and Nigeria, to maintain composure, exercise patience, and control their emotions.
“Let’s avoid getting upset or fighting with one another. People who trade loyalty for convenience and honesty for deceit rarely escape public criticism, as history has consistently demonstrated.
“The people of Kano will eventually support leaders who uphold their principles because the truth endures.”
