Senate President Godswill Akpabio has criticized lawmakers who openly condemn godfatherism but engage in it in private, arguing that personal examples are necessary to establish credibility in the fight against the problem.
Akpabio gave a speech on Saturday at the Nigerian Air Force Conference Centre in Kado, Abuja, to commemorate the publication of Effiong Bob’s book, The Burdens of Legislators in Nigeria.
Former Senate President David Mark served as the event’s chair.
In response to conversations about godfatherism that took place during the event, Akpabio cited what he called inconsistencies in the positions of certain political figures.
The son of a well-known senator is, of course, also a member of the House of Assembly. Upon learning that he opposed godfatherism, I responded, “All right,” Akpabio stated.
As a first step in demonstrating your opposition to godfatherism, he continued, “perhaps you will remove your son from the House of Assembly.”
The president of the Senate contended that it is contradictory to denounce godfatherism while purportedly enjoying its advantages.
“You cannot practice on the right while saying something on the left. Otherwise, it will be a combination of approving and reprimanding,” he said.
However, Akpabio conceded that the legislator in issue was doing well in the assembly.
