Amid attempts by some stakeholders both inside and outside the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to put forward a joint presidential ticket of him and former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ahead of the general elections in 2027, former President Olusegun Obasanjo is reportedly supporting Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP).
According to what was learned, Obasanjo is generally seen as not just favorable to the concept but also as the main advocate for Peter Obi’s aspirations and in favor of larger initiatives to form a respectable opposition alliance.
Several people who spoke to Daily Trust about the issue claimed that the effort is cross-party and involves some retired military officers, major opposition politicians, and power brokers.
Obasanjo is allegedly supporting the joint ticket because the two of them offer a more competitive alternative to the All Progressives Congress (APC) than any single candidate. The renewed push follows the 2023 election, in which both Peter Obi and Kwankwaso performed primarily in the regional arena.
Still Supporting Peter Obi, Obasanjo
In response to the news, Obasanjo’s media assistant, Kehinde Akinyemi, stated that the former president still backs Peter Obi’s bid for president, just as he did in the 2023 election.
“Yes,” he responded, “I can corroborate that one. I can attest that he supports Obi’s bid for president.
Akinyemi refuted reports that Obasanjo had met with ADC leaders or given them instructions to produce the Peter Obi–Kwankwaso ticket.
“How can I tell if they gave a mandate when I don’t know there was a meeting?” he continued.
It is not on the ADC agenda.
A senior ADC member who reviewed the topic with Daily Trust stated that although the Peter Obi–Kwankwaso plan is being discussed and debated by opposition stakeholders and party members, it has not been formally accepted or discussed inside the party’s decision-making organs.
The question of matching Obi with Kwankwaso has persisted since the previous election, he stated. Many leaders think that Obi and Kwankwaso may have won if they had ran together in 2023. For them, it’s a lost chance.
What I do know is that while this is being debated in a number of opposition circles, the ADC as a party has not made it a priority. Party leaders and members are more concerned about considering out loud which ticket has the best chance of unseating the APC.
“Obasanjo’s longstanding support for Peter Obi is no secret,” the ADC chieftain declared in response to allegations that retired generals are actively spearheading the effort.
“You know that former President Obasanjo is an Obi fan,” the insider continued. On the Obi ticket, he is advocating. It is likely that he has had conversations with other former generals, but I am unable to verify that.
The resoluteness of Peter Obi’s followers, according to another party insider, might be connected to pledges made behind closed doors.
People from all sides of the opposition, including groups inside the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have expressed interest in the ADC due to its growing prominence, the source continued.
Obi’s fans must have been promised something if they were insistent on “Obi or nothing,” according to the source. I am aware that talks, meetings, and conversations are still going on.
“A scenario in which members split up following the primaries is what the ADC wishes to prevent.” Because of this, there is a strong belief that before reaching that point, the party must decide on a common course.

The Turaki-led leadership is currently more aligned with the ADC than the APC, and the Wike group is collaborating with the APC, as you are aware. They will support the ADC if they are unable to obtain what they desire.
