In the Rivers State House of Assembly, the forthcoming bye-elections for Khana Constituency 2 and Ahoada East Constituency 2 will go on, according to Rivers State Resident Electoral Commissioner Professor Gabriel Yomere.
There would be no candidates from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Labour Party, or Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 21 bye poll in Rivers, he said.
When Yomere briefed reporters, she affirmed this.
He said that internal and procedural issues among the parties are the reason behind these political heavyweights’ absence from the election preparations.
It has been over two years since the two Assembly seats became vacant.
After Dinebari Loolo passed away in September 2023, the seat for Khana Constituency 2 fell empty, and Edison Ehie resigned in December 2023 to take the position of Chief of Staff to the Governor of Rivers State, leaving Ahoada East Constituency 2 vacant.
Now that voters in the impacted constituencies have a chance to choose their representatives for the first time, twelve candidates from seven smaller political parties are competing for the open seats.
Residents were informed by Professor Yomere that all logistical preparations for a seamless election had been completed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In keeping with the commission’s dedication to legitimacy, he further emphasized that all Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs) are permanent INEC employees rather than Corps members.
