Ahead of the February 21, 2026 elections, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has been under fire from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for allegedly declaring war on anti-Tinubu candidates.

Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s national publicity secretary, issued a statement on Monday calling the remark hazardous and careless.

The statement said it wouldn’t prevent Nigerians from choosing their candidates.

In light of the nation’s current political unrest, economic hardship, and insecurity, the ADC said the minister’s comments were concerning.

We believe that the Minister’s declaration of war against alleged anti-Tinubu candidates is not only reckless, but also dangerous given the precarious state of our country right now. Inflammatory speech from those in public office is the last thing Nigeria needs at a time when its citizens are dealing with unheard-of levels of economic misery, insecurity, and political mistrust.

Since Nigeria is a constitutional democracy, it cannot be used as a platform for political score-settling. The statement cautioned that the people ultimately hold the power, not any president, minister, or anybody who mistakenly believes that holding public office entitles them to control the nation.

Nigerians cannot be intimidated or coerced, the party declared, reminding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nyesom Wike, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and other government officials.

Any attempt to intimidate or coerce voters into complying, it continued, simply reveals fear and highlights what it said is a rising sense of unease among Wike, Tinubu, and the APC regarding their level of popular support as well as a growing gulf between the government and many residents.

If Wike, the APC, and its leaders are confidence in their abilities, they ought to respectfully accept the electorate’s decision.

The ADC will not stand by and watch while our democracy is sabotaged by political actors. We will vigorously oppose any attempt, whether overt or covert, to undermine Nigerians’ right to freely select their leaders using all available tools. We are ready to rally civil society partners, democratic institutions, and the Nigerian people to protect the integrity of the voting process,” the statement continued.

The ADC stated, “They should respectfully submit to the electorate’s decision if they are confident in their performance.”

The party also pledged to oppose any effort to tamper with the election’s results.

Through all available means, we will forcefully oppose any attempt, whether overt or covert, to undermine Nigerians’ right to freely pick their leaders, the statement said.

The ADC maintained that neither a proclamation of war nor political pressure will overcome the electorate’s voice in the polls on February 21.
