In relation to the state’s kidnapping and killing of three Cameroonian nationals, the Anambra State Police Command has detained four more suspects.
According to reports, the victims were kidnapped in November 2025 and subsequently killed, with their bodies being disposed of in a river in the Anambra West Local Government Area. A thorough inquiry was launched after police officers found their decaying remains floating on the lake.
At the beginning of the investigation, two people who were allegedly providing information were taken into custody. But in a statement released on Monday, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer, said that four additional people were arrested on Friday as a result of admissions made by the previous suspects.
The suspects were captured at a shrine in Nando, Anambra East Local Government Area, after a gunfight with security personnel, according to Ikenga.
Nwabunne Bright, 27, Chinecherem Chiama, 21, Michael Ekwunife, 38, and the purported top priest of the shrine, Chukwuemeka Emmanuel, also called “Ugoebenajah,” 27 were the suspects, he said.
A machete, a locally manufactured Beretta handgun, two pump-action weapons, a variety of charms, extended ammo, ten live cartridges, and five rounds of 9mm ammunition were among the items found at the site.
As per Ikenga, the operation was executed by members of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, based on reliable information obtained from the detained individuals.
As they got closer to the shrine, they noticed that roughly thirty physically fit men were gathering there. “The armed men opened fire on the operatives upon spotting the police,” the statement said in part.
When the police arrived, they engaged the armed men in a professional gunfight. Although the main suspect, Oroma Etiti Anam native Uchenna Mmaduamaka Nicholas, and other gang members who were shot were able to flee, one of the detained suspects was shot in the thigh and is presently undergoing medical care.
While efforts are being made to capture gang members who are on the run, the police claimed that the suspects who were caught are being questioned.
In addition to reaffirming its dedication to protecting locals, the command asked the public to contribute pertinent information to support current investigations.
It had been reported on November 29, 2025, that two decaying female bodies were found in a river in Anambra West LGA by police, and were thought to be those of three missing Cameroonian ladies.
On November 28, 2025, Ikenga revealed that members of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, along with professional divers and community volunteers, carried out a thorough search along the Omambala River, which resulted in the sobering finding.
He went on to say that a third suspect was released on bail, while two suspects, Nonso Augustine Akpeh, 37, and Kingsley Akpeh, 44, were first taken into custody to aid in the investigation.
