During an attack on a Nigerian Army installation in Borno State, armed rebels connected to Boko Haram reportedly killed numerous troops, including Army Major U. I. Mairiga.
Early on Sunday morning, a forward military post along the Banki axis was the target of the attack, according to reports.
According to reports, the attackers overran the troops positioned at the base when they struck in well-coordinated groups.
According to security sources, the attack took place at the Forward Base Operations on the Bama-Gwaza Road close to the Banki intersection. As soldiers tried to fend off the assailants, there was a lot of gunfire for hours.
Members of the Islamic State West Africa Province, a group that has stepped up attacks on military units throughout the Northeast, were identified as the militants.
It has been confirmed that a senior Army officer was killed in the operation. A number of other troops were also killed, and amid the confusion, some staff apparently withdrew into nearby bushes.
An Army Major and numerous other soldiers were killed this morning after gunmen suspected to being Boko Haram terrorists attacked Forward Base operations at Banki crossroads at around 0400 hours.
“Their bodies are being taken to Maiduguri’s 7 Division Military Hospital.”
While the search for missing soldiers continues, the corpses of the fallen soldiers were transferred to a military medical facility in Maiduguri.
The most recent event is part of a series of attacks against military targets in the state in recent years. Insurgents damaged armored vehicles and took weapons from an Army base in Jakana, which is part of the Kaga Local Government Area, weeks prior.
“This morning, June 02, 2025, Boko Haram terrorists attacked an Army outpost along Maiduguri/Damaturu Road in Jakana town, resulting in numerous casualties on our side.”
Days prior, seven soldiers, including a recently promoted Lieutenant Colonel, had been slain in another horrific ambush while on operational movement.
According to military insiders, the militants used explosives and were shot at during these operations, resulting in major losses and injuries, with several soldiers still missing.
ISWAP has intensified its presence in the Lake Chad region since the passing of former Boko Haram commander Abubakar Shekau, taking in defectors and putting more strain on the local security forces.
In parallel, 42 sheep were found and four suspected livestock rustlers were taken into custody by the Niger State Police Command in various operations throughout the state.
Wasiu Abiodun, the command’s public relations officer, revealed this in a statement on Sunday, stating that the arrests were carried out in response to reliable intelligence.
The statement claims that on February 24 at approximately 6 p.m., police officers who were part of the Crack Squad apprehended and detained the accused.
The suspects were identified as 23-year-old Abubakar Musa of Maito village via Lemu, 20-year-old Muhammad Ibeto of Kara via Jebba, 20-year-old Bello Saidu of Kara via Jebba, and 20-year-old Abubakar Alhaji of Kara via Jebba.
According to Abiodun, the arrests came after a tip that the culprits had been seen near Raba Forest via Mokwa with possibly stolen animals.
Police officers immediately sprang into action and followed the criminals down the Jebba-Mokwa route.
He claimed that four members of the syndicate were taken into custody while others fled into the jungle.
During questioning, the suspects allegedly admitted to rustling the sheep from Salihu village through Mokwa and named additional gang members.
The 42 recovered sheep have been claimed by their rightful owner, according to Abiodun, who also stated that attempts were on to apprehend the escaping suspects.
