The decision of the Kano State government, led by Governor Abba Yusuf, to let Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano, to hold a limited Sallah procession has been questioned by Aminu Ado Bayero, the 15th Emir of Kano.
Despite the continuing legal controversy surrounding the Kano Emirate, which is presently before the courts, Bayero claims that the approval amounts to preferential treatment and might possibly be taken as an official endorsement of Sanusi as Emir.
The 15th Emir stated that he has agreed with the state government’s decision to postpone the customary Eid durbar in spite of the reservations expressed, emphasizing the necessity of preserving peace and stability in Kano State.
According to sources, Aminu Babba Danagundi, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba, revealed the traditional ruler’s position at a press conference.
All preparations for the Sallah parade were canceled, according to Danagundi, since the king ordered his supporters to fully comply with the government’s instruction.
He emphasized that the Emirate will not take part in any activity that could incite disturbance in the state and claimed that the decision to miss the durbar was made in the sake of peace.
He expressed gratitude to the Kano State Government for taking a more comprehensive approach to security, but he reaffirmed his worries over Sanusi’s authorization for a small parade.
Even though the legal issue over the Kano Emirate is still pending, Danagundi argued that such a decision could be interpreted as implicit acknowledgment of Sanusi.
Recall that Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano, will preside over the state’s 2026 Eid-el-Fitr Durbar, as previously announced by Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, reportedly revealed the most recent development in a statement released on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the decision to permit Sanusi to head the Sallah Durbar was made in response to reliable intelligence reports that suggested some people were attempting to incite trouble during the Sallah time.
Additionally, it said that stringent rules have been released to prevent a breakdown of law and order during the festivities and that the Kano administration is still dedicated to protecting Kano’s cultural legacy.
The statement states that Emir Sanusi will lead Hawan Idi (Eid Durbar) from the Kofar Mata Eid Ground via approved pathways to Gidan Shettima, ending at the emir’s palace’s Kofar Fatalwa.
The Kano government added that Hawan Daushe, Hawan Fanisau, and Hawan Dorayi have been temporarily suspended for the sake of public safety, while Hawan Nasarawa would be held in a reduced format without horseback exhibitions.
