Residents of the Tor-Damisa hamlet in Taraba State’s Donga Local Government Area are in mourning following a horrific attack on Wednesday night that left at least seven people dead. The gunmen were thought to be Fulani herdsmen.
The armed attackers reportedly stormed the neighborhood, firing intermittently and frightening locals.
Officers from the Taraba State Police Command, however, assaulted the attackers, sparking a violent gunfight.
According to the Daily Post, sources revealed that the altercation turned deadly, with both sides reporting casualties.
Four civilians and three police officers were reportedly brutally murdered during the assault.
As at the time this article was filed, it was reported that the victims’ identities had not yet been made public.
Many locals fled to nearby locations in search of safety as a result of the violence, which caused panic and bewilderment across the neighborhood.
Many families fled their homes in the midst of gunfire, according to eyewitnesses, who described the scene as chaotic.
However, as at the time this report was filed, the police headquarters had not yet released an official comment.
In other news, bandits assaulted the villages of Farun Bala, Falale, and Kadobe in Katsina State’s Jibia Local Government Area on Tuesday, resulting in fifteen reported deaths and numerous injuries.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a top local government official in Jibia claimed that an earlier altercation between local vigilantes and repentant bandits set off the attack.
The official stated that the accused bandits were allegedly passing through the area with cattle that were allegedly stolen when they were apprehended by local security personnel, as reported by Daily Trust.
He clarified that three of the suspects were purportedly murdered during the ensuing altercation.
He continued by saying that armed men regrouped and returned in huge numbers to Kadobe, Farun Bala, and Falale after the three bandits were killed, terrorizing the locals.
“What took place was regrettable. After protracted discussions, this region has begun to experience peace. However, this new violence might have been sparked by the behavior of certain local security personnel.
A surge of dread, gunfire, cries, and mayhem ensued. At least fifteen people had died by the time the dust settled, he claimed.
