Nigerians have accused Moshood Jimoh, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, and CSP Adetayo Akerele, the Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force, of unlawfully detaining a group of attorneys who filed lawsuits against land grabbers.
One of the attorneys posted a live video showing the cops beating them and holding them at the command center late into the night.
“I have to record this for our safety, sir,” a female lawyer was heard saying when one of the officers tried to stop her from recording. I’m pleading with you—it’s crucial that I record it for our protection. As a lawyer, I am aware of my rights. The law permits me to record since there are six of you police.
“You can’t seize her phone,” a male coworker was heard saying.
“Who are you?” the policeman asked the male attorney on the video. Who do you think you guys are?
One of the attorneys described what happened, saying, “There’s a petition against your boss Akerele.” We are waiting for the CP to arrive and take us into custody at the command. You don’t read your Police Act, officers who are ignorant of the law. Since you guys desire to engage in criminal activity, it is evident that you are unaware that civilians can videotape you while you are performing your duties.
“You illegally held attorneys at your office. It is 11:00 p.m. And this cop, Gabriel Ibrahim, struck me in the face with his rifle, nearly breaking it. We are lawyers, and they are threatening to deal with us.
“If we lawyers who have been practicing in this country for years are assaulted, only God knows the hope of the average person. They are a task force for the police. One of the cops threatened to kill us, but nothing would stop him. They prevented us from leaving, so we have been waiting here.
Netizens have been criticizing CP Moshood Jimoh for the alleged illegal operation of Akerele in Lagos State since the video went viral. Many of them have tagged the Nigeria Police Force, IGP, and the Force spokesman when posting the video.
One user @durahtycoon said, “The CP and the popularly questioned Mr. Akinrele should be transferred to Borno State,” in support of CP Moshood Jimoh’s removal from Lagos. The police in Nigeria are not your allies.
